The executive editor of the St. Joseph News-Press was honored in January by the Northwest Missouri Press Association.

During the group’s 120th annual meeting in St. Joseph, Mo., Dennis Ellsworth was given the Merrill Chilcote Award, which honors a person’s service to journalism in Northwest Missouri.

The honor, given out since 1984, is named for a former News-Press editor. It has seen such past recipients as David Bradley, president of NPG Newspapers, which owns the News-Press, in 2009, and Kay Wilson, publisher and editor of the Nodaway News Leader in Maryville, Mo., in 2008.

Jim Fall, president of the association and former publisher of the Maryville Daily Forum, presented the award to Mr. Ellsworth for his work as president of the press association in 2003 and 2008.

“When nobody would step forward to be the president (of the press association) … he did and did an excellent job,” he said.
