DSJ writer wins High Plains Media Award

Caitlin Faddis from the American Cancer Society, Gabi Shull, and Teresa Shane from the Daily Star-Journal

The American Cancer Society recognized Daily Star-Journal staff writer Teresa Shane as a winner of the 2011 High Plains Media Award.

Shane received the award for feature writing among small market dailies for her story, “Family, friends rally to benefit 9-year-old.” The story focused on Gabrielle “Gabi” Shull, a girl with cancer, and how she, her family and the community worked together on her treatment, recovery and financial needs.

Shane’s award is one of 19 given to journalists for cancer-related stories within the High Plains Division, consisting of Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

“Teresa has demonstrated her commitment to educating the community about the importance of cancer research, early detection, how to get help, and what it feels like to be a cancer survivor,” society spokeswoman Jackie Bayly-Bryant, said. “We are extremely grateful for her efforts to align with the society’s mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back.”
